And How It Connects Your Mind and Body.
You’ve probably read the term “nervous system” throughout these blogs...
What exactly is it?
The nervous system is the communication network
between your body and brain.
It’s the system that connects:
Your brain, your body, your thoughts.
Your emotions, your reactions, your behaviors.
Your entire physiological system, via nerves.
It’s always running.
Even when you’re not thinking about it.
There are two main parts:
The central nervous system (CNS) includes your brain and spinal cord.
The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes all the nerves branching out into your body.
The CNS and PNS exchange messages every moment of life.
The nerves are like messengers.
Every second.
The body is sending information.
Signals to your brain.
From your skin.
From your muscles.
From your organs.
The brain and spinal cord are like the control center.
They send messages down to the body through the nerves.
Move. Hold.
Relax. Prepare.
This is happening whether you’re aware of it or not.
The Peripheral Nervous System — Your Body’s Messenger Network
The PNS is everything outside the brain and spinal cord.
It includes millions of nerves that reach:
Your limbs, your organs, your face, your entire body.
It has two main roles:
Sensory (input): gathers information from the body and sends it to the brain.
Motor (output): sends instructions from the brain back to the body for response.
When there is something in the world that is causing you "stress".
That infomation travels from the body to your brain via Sensory Input.
Your brain responds accordingly by sending Motor Output to the body.
This is how the mind-body connection works, physically.
The Autonomic Nervous System
Inside the PNS, there is this very important system:
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
This system runs bodily functions automatically.
It controls heart rate, breathing, and digestion.
Stress response, and energy levels.
Things we do without being conscious.
We don't have to be aware of them.
Often, we forget about them.
Yet, these things affect us directly.
The ANS has two main branches:
1. Sympathetic Nervous System
This is your stress response system.
It prepares your body for action.
Your heart rate increases.
Your breathing becomes faster.
Your muscles tighten.
This is often called: fight or flight mode.
This system uses energy.
It gets you ready to act.
2. Parasympathetic Nervous System
This is your rest and restore system.
It slows things down.
Your heart rate decreases.
Your breath deepens.
Digestion resumes.
The body begins to repair and recharge.
This system restores energy.
The Balance Between the Two
The body is designed to move between these two states.
Like a rhythm.
Activation → Recovery
Rest → Effort
However, in modern life.
We remain activated for too long.
Under constant psychological stress.
The mind stays busy outwardly.
The body holds it all in.
Without a place to let things out.
The sympathetic system stays “on.”
The parasympathetic system can’t do its job.
Leading to less energy recharge.
Less energy for you to enjoy life.
The mind and body are not separate.
They are constantly talking to each other.
Through the nervous system.
Your body sends signals upward to the brain.
In neurology, we call this " Bottom-Up" connection.
Your brain receives those signals and interprets them.
What you feel in your body
becomes what you think in your mind.
If your body feels tense.
Your thoughts become anxious.
If your body feels rushed.
Your thoughts become overwhelmed.
Feeling safe in the body helps the mind settle.
This is happening every moment.
This is where everything you’ve been reading connects.
You don’t change your state by forcing your system to keep running on less fuel.
You change your state by working with your system.
By helping your system recharge energy.
Keeping that energy inside the body.
This is why awareness matters.
This is why regulation matters.
You are part of a system that is always communicating.
When you learn how to listen to that system.
You stop fighting.
You start working with how you’re actually built.
That’s where real change begins.
This is the foundation of The Quiet Work.
If this resonates, this is exactly what we work with in sessions.
Start where you are.🌿
