Your brain is made of billions of neurons.
You gut has neurons too.
Hundreds of millions of them.
So many that scientists gave it its own name:
The enteric nervous system.
More commonly, the second brain.
Unlike most systems in the body.
The enteric nervous system doesn't need your brain's permission to operate.
It makes decisions.
It can function independently.
It senses.
It responds.
It communicates.
On its own.
The primary road connecting your gut and brain
Called the "vagus nerve".
One of the longest nerves in the body.
Running from your brainstem all the way down into your abdomen.
What's remarkable about this highway is its direction.
About 80–90% of the signals traveling along the vagus nerve go upward.
From the gut to the brain.
Not the other way around.
Your gut is not waiting for instructions.
It is constantly working.
Constantly influencing how your brain perceives the world.
